Prague Castle is the most important Czech castle. Since the 9th century Prague Castle used to be the seat of Czech princes, later kings, and since 1918 it has been the seat of the President of the Republic. Gradual extensions and modifications arose from a fort built in the 9th century, with its dimensions 570 m long and 128 m wide is one of the largest castle complexes in the world. Prague Castle is considered not only a symbol of the city of Prague but also of Czech statehood. According to the Guinness Book of Records, it is even considered the largest ancient castle in the world.
